As a child terrified by JAWS I have never thought it was safe to go back into the water.
Open Water just proved my point!
Imagine this, you are on a sort of forced vacation scuba diving in remote waters, you surface only to find that your guide boat is nowhere around. At first you don't panic, but then as the hours drift by and you are chewed upon, stung and nudged by various sea creatures you begin to lose a little in the way of hope. Then you can see other boats that could be your salvation, only to realize that they are miles away and there is no way to reach them. Not to mention the nighttime thunderstorm. What was terrifying to me in
Open Water was the trickling away of the hope of a rescue. The fact that this movie was based on true events just makes it all the more frightening.
Kudos to Chris Kentis for his adaptation of the events that took place. Throughout this film, I was on the edge of my seat and very disturbed as well as anxious for Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis). Trying to be optimistic and not lay blame for their unfortunate situation, neither can help but point fingers as to why they are where they are. There is an underlying feeling in the film that even if this couple does survive in open waters, their relationship will not survive outside of them.
I think fact that this film was low budget and therefore shot in video and with a skeleton crew really lent to it's authenticity. I also have to give the actors a lot of credit for literally swimming with the fishies. Not sure I could or would do the same!
