The Craft was a smart little chiller that combined the usual high school drama of movies like Heathers and Jawbreaker with just the right twist of witchery and revenge.
Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney) is a newcomer in a Catholic school filled with the normal teenaged crowd - spoiled little rich kids, annoying braggart jocks and of course a dark coven of witches. Being touched with a bit of the power herself, Sarah is drawn to a group of three girls - Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Bonnie (Neve Campbell) and Rochelle (Rachel True) - who have been experimenting with witchcraft. Unbeknownst to her, Sarah is actually a "natural witch" and seems to make all of their spells come true. They quickly become great friends and have quite a bit of fun with their new found powers.
Nancy, who was the leader of the pak before Sarah came along becomes a bit jealous of her and turns on her the first chance she gets. Bonnie and Rochelle are pretty much followers so it is no surprise that they fall right in line with Nancy's crazy plans. Sarah however, will not be taken down so easily and much to Nancy's chagrin she uses her powers to bind her from harming herself or others.
This was a cute movie. Fairuza Balk just freaks me out though, because she reminds me so much of someone I know who acts (and looks) a lot like her in this film. Neve Campbell was pretty good in the supporting role as was Rachel True. Not being a huge bug fan, I have to admit I was quite freaked out when the bugs and spiders and snakes (oh my!) started pouring out of the woodwork, but they definitely had their place in the film.
If you like movies about the inner workings of the teenage mind and films about witches then The Craft will be right up your alley. If nothing else, the revenge scenes are very entertaining. Especially when Laura Lizzie (Christine Taylor) gets hers!
