Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Lust, Greed, Pride and Envy...Se7en Deadly Sins...Se7en Horrific Murders.

What a wild ride Se7en is...from the discovery of the first sin (Gluttony) to the last sin (sorry can't tell you that...that might spoil things) this movie is one hell of a roller coaster. You think you are just watching another story about the "old" detective handing over the keys of his kingdom to the "green" detective, but what you are led into runs much deeper than that.

Detective Lt. William Sommerset (Morgan Freeman) has a very cynical view on the world. He has been jaded, this much is obvious from the first scene. Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) reminds me of an over excitable Pomeranian trying to prove the power of his bite to the big dogs. Tracy Mills (Gwyneth Paltrow) shines through the darkness and grittiness of the film with the light of her innocence. And let us not forget good ole John Doe (Kevin Spacey) who must prove to the world that no sin will go unpunished.

Se7en really relies on the development of these four characters-as much, if not more than the actual murders themselves. Though the murders themselves were what wove the characters together in their own sick way. It is interesting that at the end of Se7en I wound up feeling that for having known the Mills, Sommerset found some of that hope he had lost. But for having met Doe, David Mills got a souring taste of what Sommerset had known all along...the world is one $@#*-ed up place to live in.

This is definitely a film that I would recommend to all who love a great psychological thriller. It is on par with Silence of the Lambs though in my opinion, Spacey doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of performance that Anthony Hopkins does. All in all ... Se7en is a must see.
