How do you like your chocolate . . . dark or semi-sweet?

In the Masters of Horror episode directed by Mick Garris titled Chocolate, we find a recently divorced man Jamie (Henry Thomas) working in a lab creating artificial flavors for various edible products. As he searches for the perfect honeydew melon flavor, strange almost disabling flashes overtake his senses. And it all starts with the decadent flavor of chocolate.

It seems he is somehow psychically linked to a woman in a foreign country who he doesn’t even know. But he has very vivid visions of her being intimate with a very hunky artist. That is until she guts him in cold blood.

Jamie’s visions are so realistic that he is convinced that this woman does exist and he is intent on finding her. His unhealthy obsession takes him to Canada where he does find Catherine. As he professes both his love for her and his uncanny knowledge of her crime, he will not be swayed from his seeming goal of possessing her. Unfortunately for Jamie, Catherine does not exactly feel the same way.

We both begin and end the episode with him being grilled by the police for the apparent murder of the object of his desires. And although he tries to explain to the detectives what exactly happened, it is plain to see that they do not believe his story of his link to this beautiful woman.

This episode was not the greatest, but it was entertaining. I especially liked the character of Wally (Matt Frewer) – the aging, red mohawk wearing, rock star who can eat like a little hog and not gain an ounce. This is in strict contrast to Jamie who eats rabbit food throughout most of the episode in order to keep his svelte figure. All in all okay, but I truly hope that Garris’ next project (a mini-series of the Stephen King novel Desperation set to air on TV sometime in 2006) is better.
