A story about a man and his car, his obsession with the car and the car's obsession with him.
Okay, everyone knows one of these guys. The ones who are obsessed with a vehicle of a certain make, model and year. They will do anything to restore an old clunker to glory - so focused on restoring their beauty that everything else seems to fall by the wayside...girlfriends, friends, school, work, etc. Well imagine if the feeling were mutual? The car in turn is obsessed with the man.
Stephen King Christine is this story.
Before Arnie Cunningham(Keith Gordon) met Christine, he was a nobody. A geek pushed around by the roughnecks at school, his hopes and dreams squashed by his parents at every turn. He's saved a few bucks and decided to invest in an automobile he has found for sale by the roadside. From the beginning, his best friend Dennis (John Stockwell) tries to warn him that Christine is a hunk o' junk, but Arnie seems to see beyond the beat up exterior and into the soul of Christine.
As he refurbishes the old rust bucket, strange things begin to happen. One by one, anyone who crosses Arnie (or Christine) seems to meet with an unfortunate end. As a matter of fact, anyone too close to Arnie better watch out - even his newfound girlfriend Leigh (Alexandria Paul) and best friend Dennis are not safe. Especially when they begin to suspect that there is more to Christine than meets the eye...
Beyond being a story about a man and his car,
Stephen King's Christine is a story about teenage metamorphosis and the desperate want to fit in somewhere. We all remember what it was like to be tormented as a teenager, or if not, we knew of a teenager who was tormented. I think this is why the movie hits a chord with so many. Though the movie doesn't really hold up to the book, it is good in it's own respect. I find that most Stephen King books just don't translate well onto the big screen unless they are made into a mini-series. There is just too much detail to cram into a 90-120 minute movie.
