Ahhh . . . there's nothing like a mother's love . . .
. . . or a mother's guilt I suppose which was evident in this Medium episode entitled Sweet Child of Mine.
We begin this episode seeing what life would've been like for the Dubois family if Joe (Jake Weber) and Allison's (Patricia Arquette) first child had come to fruition. For some reason (either miscarriage or stillborn - it is not made clear quite how) little Ryan was never meant to be. Every year around the time he was to be born, Allison has at least one dream about what might've been. This combined with the introduction of a stray pooch into family life this episode really does a lot to shed some light into the dynamics of the Dubois family.
But to the crux of the story, as Allison has her yearly "Ryan" dream, she also becomes involved in a case of murder at the local coffee shop. Her dream woke her up early and she realized they were out of coffee (now that's a crime!) and when she went down to their local coffee shop she winds up finding the manager dead in the backroom from blunt force trauma to the head. What a way to start the day . . .
Throughout this episode Allison struggles with her own feelings of guilt and a mother's protective instinct when she tries to help the district attorney's office with their case. It is easy to see how torn she is when she conveniently leaves out details citing the fact that she would have acted in the same manner had this been happening with her own child.
An interesting episode, though not my favorite it certainly shows that Allison is a real person who sometimes gives into her feelings though they might not ultimately show her the right things to do. And again I am reminded what a gem Bridgette (Maria Lark) is as she tries to shield her father from the devastating news about little Angus' health condition. As she so preciously puts it (and I am paraphrasing here) 'I knew it would make you so sad that I didn't think I could take it'. Oh what a cute little eccentric kid she is!
