The Renny Harlin action packed, horror, crime thriller Mindhunters was actually a smashing good time. It surprised me too after the pig vomit he tried to call an Exorcist prequel . . .

The story was pretty well defined with seven hopeful FBI profilers sent out onto a deserted island for one last test of their skills. Two of the wanna be profilers, Vince (Clifton Collins Jr.) and Sara (Kathryn Morris), already know they supposedly haven't made the cut before they make this little trip. The rest of the group - Bobby (Eion Bailey), Nicole (Patricia Velasquez), Rafe (Will Kemp), Lucas (Jonny Lee Miller) and J. D. (Christian Slater) - are just itching to get started on their little adventure which has been orchestrated by Jake Harris (Val Kilmer) who will be dropping them off and no doubt somehow watching their every move.

As they make the trip to the rigged island, they are joined by outsider, Gabe Jensen (LL Cool J - he is just the coolest!) who is just coming along to supposedly observe one of these little exercises. But when things start going bad and one by one profilers start being murdered, he is the first and foremost suspect.

Each murder is preceded by the discovery of a watch that has been stopped at the precise time that the next person is going to die. The trick is to figure out who is next and how not to be killed. But to do that the group must profile their mystery killer while they try to hang on to their own skins and sanity.

This film is full of tremendous kill scenes, with an amazing attention to detail. I have to say there is a toss up to my favorite killing either being the scene with the acid cigarettes or the initial kill scene involving dominos. Either way, they were both awesome. And don't think that you have things figured out so very soon when you think you know who the killer is. There are quite a few twists and turns in this little plot line.

The action in the movie is pretty well done too - not too over the top though it does toe the line at some points. It's certainly not the best movie I have ever seen and I wasn't thrilled by the ending, but Mindhunters on a whole was a pleasant surprise to what I expected from Renny Harlin.

So Renny, you can dip your toe in my horror so long as it is action packed . . .
