Definitely not my favorite in the series . . .
Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood takes place at Crystal Lake years after Jason (
Kane Hodder) was chained to the rock in the lake by Tommy Jarvis. We begin the movie in flashback of that event and of another sad event that happened at the lake - the death of the father (
John Otrin) of young Tina Shepard (
Jennifer Banko) which she believes that she caused.
Flash forward a few years and a teenaged Tina (
Lar Park-Lincoln) has returned to the lake with her mother (
Susan Blu) and her therapist, Dr. Crews (
Terry Kiser) to try and supposedly coax her back to reality and into a normal life. Unbeknownst to mom, the doctor's motives are anything but pure as he has been trying to elicit Tina's telekinetic powers by pushing her to the brink of an emotional breakdown. While this doesn't bode well for Tina, it is just the thing to break the chains that bind Jason to that pesky rock at the bottom of the lake - let the killings commence.
Oh and by the way there is a nice little cabin next door that just so happens to be filled with a bunch of horny, boozed out and drugged up little teenagers. Complete with the whitest black couple I have ever seen, this
Friday the 13th movie had a group of yuppie teens who were throwing a party for a friend who never quite makes it to the lake (big surprise). They of course, manage to entertain themselves and this leads to their downfall as we all know that Jason is a big fan of killing anyone who may be having any kind of fun in his woods.
Interesting kill scenes in this one, though I had to keep asking myself where the heck Jason was getting his tools. I mean it was like a literal Home Depot of gardening tools that he seemed to just be finding scattered throughout the woods. And if Jason supposedly drowned when he was a young boy how does he know how to work the weed wacker with what looked like a saw blade attached to it?
This installment in the series also reminded me just how tough it is to "kill" Jason, or at least stop him long enough so that the paramedics and firefighters can save the remaining survivors. And of course the burning question at the end of this film as most others in the series of "where's Jason" was left unanswered - which of course will lead us to the sequel. Being that this was number 7 and there are at least 4 more out there to this date it seems that Jason will never die . . . not that I want him to, you understand.
While this wasn't my favorite in the series, it certainly wasn't my least favorite either . . . we leave that dubious distinction to Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.
