Review - Hostel

Throughout this film I just kept cringing and saying to myself, there really can't be places like this . . .

. . . can there?

To say that some of the scenes in Hostel (especially the uncut DVD version) were disturbing does not even give them the proper justice. Some were downright uncomfortable almost to the point of being too unbearable to watch. But watch I did, all the while my husband laughing at me as I clutched my neck, my shoulders, my legs, my hands and my eyes - not to mention a variety of my other body parts in sympathy for the characters.

But beyond just the gruesome aspects of Hostel, it was really very, very good. I was immediately drawn into the story of the three young men, Paxton (Jay Hernandez), Josh (Derek Richardson) and Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson) as they backpacked across Europe in search of the hottest sex and the highest high - not sure which was more important here to be honest.

One fateful night they got themselves locked out of the hostel they were staying at and were lucky enough to be invited up to another young man Alex's (Lubomir Bukovy) room. Once there he told them of a most incredible hostel in a Slovakian city and showed him pictures of the beautiful women that he had met there. Well, that's all it took and the boys were off to party the rest of their stay away.

Unfortunately for the boys this was the beginning of the end. The moment they arrived at the fantasy Hostel things really seemed to be looking up for the boys' good time, but all was not as it seemed. The remainder of this film was filled with sex, violence, torture, revenge and even a smidgen of humor thrown in for good measure. This all adds together for an extremely well done thrilling horror movie with an ending I didn't quite expect.

I have to throw in a kudos to the part played by Jan Vlasak as the Dutch businessman or rather Edward Saladhands as the boys affectionately called him. He played a most interesting character. I also thoroughly enjoyed the child gang aspect as it was explained in the film that the worst of crimes in the area were perpetrated by the children. Pretty scary concept if you ask me.

A great film that is certainly not for everyone with its combination of unsettling scenes and simply terrifying plot line, I quite enjoyed Hostel and would definitely recommend it. However, this film is absolutely NOT for the faint of heart.

Kudos to Eli Roth - you have definitely outdone yourself this time.

 Re: Hostel
Hostel was the WORST MOVIE EVER. You have to be a SICK, DEMENTED FREAK who is in DESPERATE Need of help to enjoy that piece of crap.

Utter, disgusting trash. Every part of it was pornographic in some way. I was expecting a movie similar to Saw, but Hostel is the lamest excuse for a film EVER. I wanted to burn it.
