Probably my favorite movie as a confused teenager . . .
I remember watching
Heathers over and over again with my very best friend in high school. There was something about this one and The Outsiders that always made it to movie night. Aaahhh . . . memories.
But I digress, back to Heathers. This was a movie all about teenage suicide (or rather murder) and how it brought deeper levels to the shallowest of people. As Veronica (Winona Ryder) -- the only Heather who wasn't Heather -- so aptly put it "Suicide gave Heather (Kim Walker) depth, Kurt (Lance Fenton) a soul, and Ram (Patrick Labyorteaux) a brain." All of which these three were certainly lacking.
Veronica Sawyer finds herself in the coolest click in the school with Heather Chandler, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) and Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk). She is not extremely happy with her life which is full of petty, shallow and utterly useless activities such as the daily lunchtime polls. Veronica also feels badly for the friends she used to have such as Betty Finn (Renee Estevez) and Martha 'Dumptruck' Dunnstock (Carrie Lynn) whom she has had to leave in the dust due to her newfound popular status.
All this is about to change for Veronica though as a new dark horse by the name of JD Dean (Christian Slater) has ridden into town. He has his own ideas about teenage society the world over and what should be done with the Heathers and most every other student at Westerberg High. Veronica finds herself knee deep in corn nuts and suicide conspiracy as she wrestles with her own teenage angst and raging hormones and searches for the answer of how to stop what she has become an unwitting part of.
A great little 80's movie that even now has not lost any appeal for me. Full of interesting dialogue and mean spirited teenaged pranks this movie is sure to please any fan of watching the confusion of youth and people getting their comeuppance.
