I learned that a
cryptozoologist is one who studies creatures, such as the Sasquatch, whose existence has not been substantiated. I love a movie that can teach me something. Well, maybe love is a strong word - but for a Sci-Fi Originals
Chupacabra: Dark Seas (AKA Chupacabra Terror) wasn't all that bad!
Dr. Pena (Giancarlo Esposito), our overacting cryptozoologist, is searching a far off tropical island for the mythological Chupacabra. He goes through many of his crew capturing this blood sucking creature and finally has it deposited onto an unsuspecting cruise ship. Luckily for the cruise ship it has also just happened to pick up U.S. Marshall Lance (Dylan Neal) due to some money gone missing on the ship.
Captain Randolph (John Rhys-Davies) and Tae-Bo instructing daughter, Jenny (Chelan Simmons) team with Lance to try and stop the blood sucking Chupacabra once some nimrods that Pena hired release it from it's wooden crate. Of course, once released from the wooden crate, Chupacabra is all but invincible - killing everything in site and is even impervious to bullets. I did find it interesting how even though its armor like skin could not be permeated by bullets, Chupacabra seemed truly wounded by Jenny's Tae-Bo kicks (Billy Blanks must be oh so proud).
With some hilariously overacted and annoying characters - such as Mrs. Voorhees (Paula Shaw), a dried up old aristocrat complete with her own cute little yappy pooch and Rick McGraw (David Millburn), a would be gigolo who reminded me oddly of Will Ferrell -
Chupacabra: Dark Seas was quite entertaining. I mean, this is not Oscar material here but it was definitely one of the better Sci-Fi Originals I have seen in quite a while.
A definite recommend as long as you are not in a "taking it seriously" kind of mood.
