Darkness - fitting title for a film that left me feeling totally in the dark . . .

Okay first of all, the whole premise around the movie just felt forced. We meet a family who has moved to a whole new country for the mom (Lena Olin) to take a job as a nurse at her estranged father in law's (Giancarlo Giannini) hospital? And what the father (Iain Glen) does for a living we never do learn. It doesn't seem like he has any job at all.

And then you have the father's mysterious disease which supposedly explains away all of the really strange things he's been doing. Not to mention the fact that no one seems at all concerned that he is basically tearing the house apart piece by piece with a giant pick axe. Weird family dynamic if you ask me . . .

But good old Regina (Anna Paquin), the older sister to Paul (Stephan Enquist) seems to know something is up and she begins researching this big old house they have been living in with the help of her friend Carlos (Fele Martinez). She eventually runs into Villalobos (Fermi Reixach), the original architect of the house, and he tells her some strange stories about the construction of this evil house and tells her to get her brother out.

I don't really know where to go in telling you the rest of the story because to say anymore would give too much up, but giving too much up isn't really that big a deal because it doesn't make much sense anyway. Catch my drift?

I will say there were some decent scares with demons running across ceilings and menacing phantom children running around in the dark and making obscene phone calls. But honestly, I never got a real feel for why the house was even there in the first place or who or what these demons were after. In reality, the ending was actually the best part of the movie and no it was not just because it was over. All I will say about it is that it was a very "dark" ending.

Watch it - then if you get anything more out of Darkness than I did, please explain it to me . . .
