Saw III left me a bit disappointed . . .
Don't get me wrong - it was a solid, gory, blood infested good time but the underlying storyline just didn't do it for me. If you go into watching Saw III not expecting a superbly crafted puzzle as we experienced in the first two films, you might not be quite as frustrated as I found myself at its conclusion.
I can honestly say that there were some really awesome kill scenes in this film - from the exploding rib cage to the slow freezing to the twisting torso torture scene, I did my fair share of squirming. That part of the film at least was on par with its predecessors.
Saw III picks up after Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) finds himself in the giant warehouse bathroom from the first Saw movie. I'll admit he finds an interesting way around his shackle situation but I won't go any farther than that.
Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is still very sick - I'd venture to say on the edge of death but he wants to be around for one last roll around his cleverly crafted maze created for Jeff (Angus Macfayden) a grieving father who cannot seem to get a grip over his desire for revenge on all those he feels wronged him. With the help of his trusty accomplice, Amanda (Shawnee Smith), Jigsaw plucks Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) from her flawed life and charges her with keeping him alive to see his last project through to the end.
As I stated earlier, the kill scenes are superb so if that is what you really enjoy from these films then you probably won't be disappointed. If you however, like me thoroughly enjoyed the mental aspect of the original Saw films you might find yourself wishing they maybe spent a little more time at the writer's table.
Either way, I recommend you see
Saw III because we can always use a little more gore in our lives can't we?
