With the holiday season slamming upon us I got to thinking about holiday themed horror films. Here’s a little list I came up with:
1. Gremlins: This tale of the Christmas gift gone bad warms my heart just about as much as some eggnog and spiced rum. MMM, MMM Yummy!
2. Silent Night, Deadly Night - I - IV: Can’t say that I’ve seen them all, but with names like Initiation, Better Watch Out and The Toy Maker - you just can’t go wrong.
3. Black Christmas: Not one I’ve seen but any movie about sorority sisters being terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening phone calls is a movie that I do eventually have to see!
4. Christmas Evil: Seems wrong to have “Christmas” and “Evil” in the same title but there it is. This film is about a boy who loves Christmas but is scarred for life once he learns that there is no Santa Claus.
5. Child’s Play: Who didn’t want a My Buddy doll growing up? Well young Andy Barclay gets the doll he wants along with an evil spirit that he certainly didn’t want one Christmas.
6. Jack Frost: A serial killer dies and comes back as a maniacal snowman who wreaks havoc and does things with his little carrot nose that to this day make me blush . . .
7. The Christmas Season Massacre: Never saw this one either but it has a catchy title, I’ll give it that. Any movie that involves a pirate patch can’t be all bad, can it?
8. Santa Claws: A B-horror movie actress is stalked by a deranged fan bent on claiming her for himself - this is the plot outline for what promises to be a sexy little holiday treat.
9. The Nightmare before Christmas: This is a jolly little Tim Burton animated masterpiece about Jack Skellington - the pumpkin king of Halloweentown - his discovery of Christmastown and subsequent attempt at putting on a Christmas of his very own.
10. Elves: Oh this one sounds wonderful and I have to find it. Here is the plot summary from IMDB- A young woman discovers that she is the focus of an evil Nazi experiment involving selective breeding and summoned elves, an attempt to create a race of supermen. She and two of her friends are trapped in a department store with an elf, and only Dan Haggerty, as the renegade loose-cannon Santa Claus, can save them.
11. Tales from the Crypt - The Robert Zemeckis Collection: On Christmas Eve a woman slaughters her husband and learns that she's on Santa's naughty list when an escaped maniac dressed as Santa Claus shows up at her doorstep with a special present for her.
12. Don’t Open Until Christmas: Looks like a cute little Christmas slasher about one naughty person who happens to be killing anyone in a Santa suit in London. Haven’t seen this one either unfortunately.
And last but not least, let’s throw a New Year’s movie in . . .
13. Bloody New Year: Another British holiday film about a group of five teenagers who find themselves shipwrecked and take cover in an island hotel that is still decorated for New Year’s in the summertime. It begs the question - last day of the year or last day of your life?
If I am being honest, I haven’t seen a lot of these films but now seems to be the perfect season to curl up in the warm glow of those Christmas lights with the yule log a burning and watch some of these Christmas horror classics.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!
