The biggest Curse of Alcatraz was that I forced myself to endure the entire film . . .

My friends and I get together most Friday nights and watch a horror movie or two. A couple of weeks ago one of my friends picked out Curse of Alcatraz. It looked like it had potential. I mean the cover was really scary looking and who wouldn’t like a horror movie shot on location on The Rock, right (supposedly the last film to be shot on location on The Rock in fact)? Unfortunately, it failed to live up to its perceived potential. Which is okay because that just means that this friend was the fourth in our horror movie watching quartet to pick a bad film – no worries man, it has happened to all of us!

But I digress. It seems that Alcatraz was maybe built on some sort of hallowed ground. An Indian burial ground to be exact. This is discovered when The Rock is opened as some sort of tourist attraction and an old body is discovered. Once it is determined that this is no crime scene, a group of students led by their trusty professor Dr. Stanovitch (Phil Austin) begin to dig deeper into the origins of the infamous island.

Things go horribly awry when one by one they start getting picked off by the rangers and each other as some horrible force seems to overcome them. Those not infected have to try and get themselves off this island of doom and despair before it is too late. But how do you get yourself off the inescapable Rock?

Good question – I guess you will have to lose approximately 100 minutes of your precious life that you can never get back to find out just as I did. Or you could just take my advice and skip it altogether.

Although I have to admit some of the kill scenes were kind of cool. For example; when handicapable Andrew Tay (Jose Solano) gets his head smashed in a cell door it is just almost too much. I mean you see it coming but you just can’t look away and then BAM! (and I don’t mean that fun and lighthearted Emeril kind of BAM! either) Still – not sure the kill scenes warrant watching the whole film. Maybe get it and fast forward . . .
