Disturbia – a guilty little pleasure . . .
I was pleasantly surprised by the bulk of Disturbia. Although there were some points in the film that just didn't seem to line up for me, for the most part it was a satisfying little nugget of isolation induced paranoia. As we find out in this film, paranoia isn't always unwarranted.
So poor young Kale (
Shia LeBeouf) loses his dad in a horrible auto accident – seriously it is horrible, I totally jumped out of my seat when they saw that second car coming – and subsequently finds himself under house arrest after popping a less than sympathetic Spanish teacher in the noggin.
Many exciting things happen the summer of Kale's house arrest. The most memorable of which is him meeting the girl of his teenage dreams, Ashley (
Sarah Roemer) who just so happened to have moved in next door. Well, this may not be the most memorable thing, maybe 2nd most memorable.
He also spends a lot of time playing peeping tom on his neighbors. Hey I mean what else is there to do after you have already constructed the proverbial Twinkie castle? He enlists the help of his new found love and his best friend Ronnie (
Aaron Yoo) to spy on his neighbor Mr. Turner (
David Morse) who he has them all believing is some sort of demented serial killer.
Kale's mom (
Carrie-Anne Moss) is seriously at the end of her rope with Kale but she is now a single mom and has to try and make the best of their situation. She tries to explain her situation to Mr. Turner who is somewhat sympathetic but what is his real motive?
A blatant rip off of
Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, Disturbia brings the story into the modern day with a sassy Suburban flare. And if you can get yourself to ignore the obvious plot issues, you might just find that
Disturbia could be your guilty little pleasure too – a definite recommend.
