Like spoofs on horror films? Then you’ll like this film...
Oddly, I found myself on the edge of my seat during a lot of this campy spoof on B monster movies. It wasn’t that the acting was so great, or that the special effects blew me away, but there was just something about the story that was endearing.
When we enter New Purgatory, we find the town hero - Lloyd (M. Emmet Walsh) - has been assigned to the local looney bin. His grandson, Travis (Tobias Mehler) has signed him out only to have him taken back into police custody after he (Lloyd) is found running around the lake with an ax in the vicinity of a grizzly killing of two moonlight lovers.
Lloyd tries to explain to his grandson that there is some sort of curse in New Purgatory that keeps making his movies come to reality every three years. Of course, Travis doesn’t bite - at first. After a series of events that his grandfather said would come true did and after viewing a few of his film with new girlfriend Jill (Angela Keep), Travis begins to take grandpa’s rants a little more seriously.
A cute movie with lots of satire on horror film “rules” (similar to Scream) and an okay monster, Monster! makes for a fun afternoon with popcorn and soda pop!
