I know some people that were just over in Brazil, I warned them not to rent
Turistas . . .
. . . I think that would really freak me out if I saw that film whilst I was in Brazil. Especially if I met someone named Kiko (Agles Steib) who wanted to take me spelunking!
Turistas was a film along the same vein as Hostel, Wolf Creek and even The Descent. What I thought was really interesting about Turistas though was how they interwove the old organs being ripped out Urban Legend. Of course, you weren’t waking up in a tub of ice in this film (you weren’t waking up at all matter of fact), but aside from that I definitely saw a parallel.
The story is simple really. A trio from America, brother and sister Alex (Josh Duhamel) and Bea (Olivia Wilde) and her friend Amy (Beau Grant) are trekking through Brazil when their old beat up bus up and crashes down a mountainside (not good for the Turistas!). As they wait for the next bus to come along, they decide to go along with a few others – Pru (Melissa George), Finn (Desmond Askew) and Liam (Max Brown) and the Aussies – to find a little drink. Thus begins their descent into a world of organ stealing debauchery that they won’t soon forget (and most won’t recover from).
There are a couple of characters I’d like to call out in this film. Kiko, the curly headed local who finds himself with a conscience and a splitting headache (literally) – he is the group’s guide when spelunking through the underwater caves. He provides a lesson in the fact that you should always be nice to the locals when in a Central American country. Zamora (Miguel Lunardi), the evil organ stealing doctor with an extreme dislike for gringos. He also finds himself at the crux of lesson about how not to treat people and I am not talking about the fact that you shouldn’t rip their organs out while they are trying to frolic in the sun of your beautiful country. Both of these characters were pretty interestingly laid out and really added to the meat and potatoes of the film.
All in all,
Turistas was an entertaining film. Not sure why it got such horrible reviews on IMDB for the most part. I mean it wasn’t a great film but then again, I don’t think it was supposed to be. It was full of sexy young people and guts and gore – all the things that I adore . . . okay sorry – got a bit carried away there!
A definite recommend for fans of films where people are stuck in a place they don’t know with an evil they are initially unaware of.
