OH why, oh why SciFi . . .
. . . do you force me to watch really, really bad movies?
I usually don’t have my hopes up for a SciFi Originals film and usually, well okay sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised. Not the case with
Monster Ark. I wonder if this was because I thought maybe, just maybe the premise was good enough to warrant a decent flick? It looked like it had a decent type budget too. To quote an IMDB user this was worse than low budget, this was bad budget.
Okay though, enough of my ranting. Like I stated before, the premise was promising enough. An archeological professor, Nicholas (Tim DeKay) and his students, Joanna (Amanda Crew) and Russell (Bill Parks) find what seems to be the last of the Dead Sea scrolls containing the complete book of Genesis. They know this because luckily Nicholas’ ex-wife, Ava (Renee O’Connor – yes of Xena fame) also just so happens to be one of the best translators on the planet. Only problem is that they just can’t seem to work together – seems there is a reason they are exes.
At any rate, the scrolls outline the supposed 1st deed that Noah was supposed to do for God – something about banishing a real bad-ass monster whose sole intent was to wipe the faithful off the face of the earth. And guess what? To make a long and badly acted story short, the fools let the monster out of its protective little blister and into the world to kill and mame.
Oh they also somehow get the Army to agree that some professors and their students could just trek through Iraq looking for some kind of buried treasure during the middle of a war. Not sure how they managed that but this luckily got us to spend some time with Major Gentry (Tommy “Tiny” Lister) who from the looks of his uniform was apparently actually a Sergeant Major or something as such. It’s all in the details my friends, all in the details . . .
There were a couple of little sub-plots that don’t add much and a few characters who tried to add too much but all in all I was unimpressed to say the very least. Not on my list of recommended viewings . . . and I had such high hopes . . .
