Black Swarm was not bad for a SciFi Original film . . .
I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, this could be because right before I was trying to watch the abomination that was Mosquito, but I digress . . .
Black Stone is a small town that is losing residents left and right. However, Jane Kozik (Sarah Allen) and her daughter Kelsey (Rebecca Windheim) have decided to find their way back to town. There is a kind of convoluted reason why they are back but I won’t get into all that now.
Luckily for them, Miss Beverly Rowe (Sheena Larkin) – Jane’s old blind babysitter- is still around to be able to “watch” Kelsey. Her other senses are apparently quite heightened as she can even hear the sky . . . this proves very useful as the film progresses.
As the Kozik’s come into to town, Kelsey meets Eli the beekeeper (Robert Englund). He is a cantankerous old coot and Kelsey asks him a lot of questions. He tried to stay mean but her inquisitive and cute little nature won his heart over from the beginning. You don’t know what to make of Eli but you do know that Kelsey really likes him.
Enter stage right Devin Hall (Sebastian Roberts) who jus so happens to run the local pest control shop. He also just so happens to be very well educated in entomology which comes in very handy later in the film as well.
So it turns out that the day before Devin is slated to leave town, his twin brother’s widow (Jane) and daughter (Kelsey) come back to town. There is also a swarm of really pissed off wasps that have happened upon Black Stone at the same time. After a few of the town’s residents are transformed into drones, Devin decides that he has to stay behind and help the new deputy sheriff (Jane) who also turns out to be the love of his life (good thing twin brother Dan died in freak accident years earlier).
Like I said, I was pretty impressed with
Black Swarm. It seemed to have a somewhat solid story and the character development was quite good as well. I really enjoyed the way the film was directed too. I may have been a little biased because, as I stated earlier I had just finished trying to watch a really, really, really bad movie but I think Black Swarm still would have held its own. A definite recommend from me, especially if you are a fan of pissed off bug movies.
