Planet Terror really tickled my funny bone as well as my horror bone . . .
. . . Who knew I had so many bones to tickle?
At any rate, after the laughter died down I found myself really enjoying Robert Rodriguez’s addition to Grindhouse Films. Although I do have to admit that I thought Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof was better, Planet Terror offered a lot for what it was.
Not really your typical zombie film in as much as for the most part the “zombies” still had some of their wits about them - especially when it came to the characters of Muldoon (Bruce Willis) and Block (Josh Brolin). Both of whom played really greatly weird and wacky characters. There were a lot of really odd characters in
Planet Terror which was really a big part of its charm in my opinion. Quentin Tarantino even made an appearance as a mean spirited would be rapist who really picked the wrong chicks to mess with.
So we being the film with Cherry (Rose McGowan) deciding that tonight was her last night as a sleazy stripper (still has both her legs at this point). She takes her money and begins her walk home when she is almost run off the road by a caravan of soldiers. Kinda random but she falls into some garbage and gets a big gash in her leg (is this when she loses her leg, you may ask . . . I asked the same thing!). With both legs in tow she continues on her journey.
She ends up meeting up with old flame, Wray (Freddy Rodriguez) at the best damn BBQ in Texas. Enter Fergie in her cameo role as Tammy the lesbian lover of Dakota (Marley Shelton). Dakota is married to Block who is apparently a crazy ass mad doctor type. Block is not happy to see that Tammy was back in town and tries to kill Dakota. Wow I just realized that there are a lot of layers to this story and if I keep getting mired in the details, my review will never end. Suffice it to say that this is a grotesquely carnal zombie flick which will leave your dark heart happy if you are a fan of these types of films.
. . . oh and watch out for the part where Dakota tells Tony not to point the gun at his face . . . it is one of the more hilarious scenes of the film.
