King of the Lost World did a couple of things to really surprise me . . .
. . . one was that it killed off people that I didn’t think it would kill off and it also didn’t have a typical happy go lucky Hollywood ending which I thought it would.
Having said that, unfortunately surprise does not equal great movie in this case – it was still okay though so all in all I wasn’t completely disappointed.
This movie had everything from giant spiders, to giant scorpions to giant apes to giant flying reptiles – oh, and did I leave out giant man eating vines? It also had a bad ass tribe of castaways who crashed on this remote island that somehow taught themselves a weird language even though they could all speak English. It was very odd.
In short for some reason, planes cannot fly over this island and hence all of the tribes people. The tribe’s people feed the giant flying reptiles sacrifices of the crash victims. The giant flying reptiles in turn keep the giant ape away from the tribe’s people – it’s a win/win. Well, except if you are on the side of the crash victims. It pretty much sucks all around for them – especially if they get marked for sacrifice. Oh and for some reason, all of the women tribes people are somehow hypnotized – again, very odd.
I also realized I didn’t tell you about the plane carrying the nuclear bomb which conveniently crashed on the island as well and oddly enough has a short range of about 300 yards. This comes in very handy later in the film.
But before I tell you too much I will just say that
King of the Lost World wasn’t a completely horrible waste of time. Should you catch it on SciFi and you are a bit bored I wouldn’t tell you not to watch it. If you have something else to do though, like wash your hair or organize your tax receipts, that kind of thing, you may want to skip it till a rainy day when the rest of the cable channels are out.
