Review - The Devil's Rejects

The Devil's Rejects was just fabulous. With no mention of the out of place Dr. Satan from House of 1000 Corpses, it has truly risen to the top of its genre . . .

I saw Rejects this afternoon and I absolutely cringed in my skin at times. What an amazingly well done, fantastically violent (but not just for the sake of violence), curiously endearing film. Honestly, by the end I was actually feeling sorry for the Firefly family as if they had not beaten, abused, molested and brutally murdered scores of innocent people. It is amazing how Zombie turns it around. He makes you see their pain too - a rough thing to do considering the way of the Fireflys.

We rejoin the Fireflys as they are being surrounded by the Pigs and are forced into fight or flight mode. Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook) is not as fortunate as Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and Otis (Bill Moseley) as they escape and make their way toward what will be an absolute killing spree. They meet up with Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) at an old rundown motel which also happens to be where a little banjo playing band is staying. Too bad for them.

From there they go to meet up with Spaulding's brother Charlie Altamont (Ken Foree) who just so happens to own the little whorehouse down the way. All the while they are being chased down by Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) who is driven by anger and guilt over the death of his brother Lieutenant George Wydell (Tom Towles) at the hands of the Firefly clan. Someone should have warned Wydell that anger and guilt can change a person in ways they don't fully understand - and dealing with the Fireflys doesn't help matters any.

Everything about The Devil's Rejects was pure genius - the casting, the acting, the directing, the setting, the plot and especially the ending. I was really worried there for a minute at the end wondering how Zombie would wrap it all up but let me assure you, he wrapped it up just as he dished it out - masterfully. Well done, Zombie, well done indeed!

An absolute must see for fans of this genre. But let me warn you, if you are not a fan of this genre, you may want to skip Rejects. It is just that intense.
