An interesting concept, a mediocre portrayal and a horrifically contrived ending, put it all together and what do you get? AVP: Alien Vs. Predator . . .

Oddly enough, it held my attention for the first ˝ hour or so and I thought "maybe it's not as bad as they said". Well, I was right about that, it wasn't as bad as they said - but it wasn't much better either.

Our heroine, Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan) reluctantly agrees to guide a group of scientists on an Antarctic expedition to uncover a mysterious heat source which has developed at the site of an old whaling post which happened to be totally wiped out exactly 100 years ago. She should have gone with her first instinct which was a big no. But she doesn't and she and the scientists make it to the site only to find a strange hole already drilled into the ice. With no equipment around to suggest another team they go down to see what's what.

Unbeknownst to the crew, they are being watched from above by the Predators who are coming down to earth to do what they have been doing for centuries - hunt Aliens. The Predators however, do know that the humans are on site and this is just what they had planned. Seems they have an Alien baby making machine set up in their little ancient pyramid and all they need is a little human host.

It becomes quite obvious from the arrival of the Predators into the pyramid that there can be only one victor in this battle - and this time it is not the humans. If the Aliens reach the surface it will be the end of the world and neither the humans nor the Predators want that.

The fight scenes are pretty decent. Having never seen the Predators movies, it was neat to see they way they fought and the weapons they had. The Aliens pretty much stuck to their old standby of constantly sneaking around above their victims and sticking out their second heads and growling a lot. I don't remember their blood being acidic in the movies, but to be fair it's been a while since I've watched them.

All in all, AVP: Alien Vs. Predator was not a completely horrible flick. But it did remind me of a Sci-fi original with slightly better production values if that tells you anything.
