Trucks coming to "life" and attacking humans - what irony . . .

The way some people beat on their vehicles it is no wonder they would begin to fight back. Being a huge Stephen King fan this was a film I just had to watch because it was based on one of his short stories. I have to say that I was not impressed at all by the characters, their acting, the directing, or even the scenery - but there was just something about Trucks that I found very entertaining. It is one of those movies that you see is on and you watch it - even though it is not that great.

The story is that all of a sudden trucks "come to life" in a town called Lunar and want to kill all humans. Lunar is a small town where Ray (Timothy Busfield) comes to live with his son Logan (Brandon Fletcher) after his wife has been brutally murdered in a drive by shooting in Detroit. Ray thought that Lunar would be a safe place for his son to grow up. Hope (Brenda Bakke) also came back to Lunar after going through a nasty divorce. She owns a small hiking tour company which is where the rest of the cast comes from - save a couple of red necked truck drivers (Aidan Devine and Rick Skene) and one ex-military cook (Victor Cowie).

The trucks effectively wipe out communication to the town and have the above mentioned characters held hostage, killing anyone who tries to stop them or is silly enough to get in their way. They do however, have a soft spot for Ray (Timothy Busfield) who is the local pump jockey. It seems even trucks believe in the saying not to bite the hand that feeds you.

In the end, the captives come up with a plan for escape and head for the hills where they cannot be followed by the trucks. But will the trucks really let them get away? I guess you'll just have to watch it to find out.

I think one of the main problems I had with the film (other than the acting, that is) was the fact that you never really got a reason as to why or how the trucks came to life. There were a few theories thrown around mostly having to do with Area 51 and aliens, but there was no real defining reason given. Not that I have to have everything explained to me but I felt that just left me hanging. So did the ending for that matter - but it did this in a good way. This is one of the rare instances where I believe the ending was actually better than the movie.

Trucks is definitely recommended viewing for Stephen King fans as well as fans of big rigs and silly movies that you watch over and over again even though you know they are not that good.
