A case study in what utter loneliness can drive a person to do, May simultaneously breaks your heart and sickens your stomach . . .
. . . but what a rush! When you first meet May (Angela Bettis) and her lazy eye you know there is going to be trouble for them later on in life. Then you meet Suzie, May's mother's (Merle Kennedy) best friend now destined to be May's best friend too (the scene where May first meets Suzie in and of itself explains a lot). All through her life May has discussed every aspect of everything with Suzie and in May's demented little world Suzie has been a contributor to this relationship. Not only being the best listener a girl could ask for but also offering her own brand of advice. Did I forget to mention that Suzie is a doll encased in glass?
So May goes through her life not knowing how to make real friends, but seeing the perfections of each person she meets. She so wants to love and be loved that she comes off as rather demented and clingy. Not to mention that she doesn't know how to act around people and very seriously wierds them out by either hurting herself or them. After each failed attempt at a relationship, May is more and more disappointed and ultimately decides that if she can't find a friend, she will just make one. Advice her Momma gave her when she was just a youngun.
A weird mixture of Frankenstein meets Carrie this film really works to make you almost understand May and want for her to be happy. Outstanding performances by Jeremy Sisto as Adam Stubbs (last name could be telling for what happens to him) - May's first obsession; Anna Faris as Polly - May's lesbian love interest from work; James Duval as Blank - May's "hot" friend from the bus stop; and Nichole Hiltz as leggy Ambrosia - May's competition for Polly's affection. And it was amazing just how beautiful and vulnerable May looked when she smiled. I just kept finding myself saying -just make her smile damn it!
Let not your heart be troubled horror fans, there was definitely enough blood to satisfy in this film and it wasn't over the top - just perfect! Mark my words, this will be a cult classic. Get it in your collection now to avoid the rush.
