Review - The Ring Two

After I watched The Ring, I thought they can't make things any worse by making The Ring Two . . .

. . . boy was I wrong. From the first scene to the last this film was just a string of chopped up ideas (and not good ones I might add) strung together on a flimsy, nonsensical plot line. The acting for the most part, stunk - if I heard Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) one more time say "She's gone honey- she can't hurt you anymore" or something as such, I was ready to rip the DVD from my player and stomp it out of existence.

Let me try to make some sense of the story here. Rachel Keller and her son Aidan (David Dorfman - who despite the awfulness of the movie gave a good performance as a creepy little kid) move away from the horrors they suffered in Seattle to a small town by the sea to live their lives in peace and quiet. Their peace however, is short lived as another of Samara's (Kelly Stables as evil Samara and Daveigh Chase as Samara in archive footage) death tapes begins its circulation again. After finding the only tape she thinks is in circulation and burning it, Rachel thinks her worries are over. But soon Aidan begins having horrible nightmares and his body temperature begins to plummet to dangerous levels. Rachel eventually enlists the help of Max Rourke (Simon Baker) the owner of the small paper she now works for to find a way to help her release her son from Samara's evil grip. Of course, Max thinks that Rachel is a little crazy and brings her and Aidan to the hospital where Rachel is under scrutiny for child abuse.

Rachel escapes the hospital and finds Samara's birth mother who basically informs her that she has let the dead in and now has to listen to her baby and basically kill him to save him. (Seems to me that would be just fine for Rachel anyway as Aidan is always in her way as she tries to leave him behind to solve the mysteries of the world.) So (mercifully) begins the final chapter of The Ring Two. I won't give away the ending here but suffice it to say that it stunk just as much as the rest of the film.

This should teach me that if I didn't like the original film, I probably won't like the sequel. But being the masochist that I am, I will undoubtedly continue to watch them. Just so I am not too negative though, I will say that I did enjoy the kill scene in the hospital of Dr. Emma Temple (Elizabeth Perkins) - I am squirming in my seat a bit thinking about it now. And the look of the film was pretty good on a whole - just too bad the substance of it didn't match.
