As I said at the end of my review of Saw, I really couldn't wait for the release of Saw II . . .

. . . so yesterday I went to a matinee showing. Luckily for me I saw it in the light of day because again, the sequel will give me nightmares for weeks to come.

We begin the film with Detective Eric Mason (Donnie Wahlberg) having a screaming match with his son Daniel (Erik Knudsen) where he basically tells the kid to go the hell away. Flash forward a couple of days and of course Daddy dearest is regretting his words of anger and is trying to get in touch with Daniel to no avail.

At this point he gets dragged to the scene of the murder of one of his informants by the famed Jigsaw Killer. Coworker Kerry (Dina Meyer) - a detective who thinks she knows all there is to know about the elusive Jigsaw Killer and has some sort of personal connection to Mason is also on the scene. Come to find out Mason's informant was murdered by The Jigsaw Killer and he has a personal message to Mason scrawled on the ceiling of the crime scene. Kerry believes that the killer wants to communicate with Mason for some reason and urges him to be the cop he once was and join the hunt for Jigsaw.

Without giving too much away, I'll tell you that John (Tobin Bell) aka The Jigsaw Killer has Mason's son held captive with a group of others that all have something in common with each other. And apparently there is some kind of game that he wants to play with Mason. But don't jump to the conclusion that you've gotten everything figured out when you learn the captives' connection. That's just the beginning of the twist . . .

As in Saw, this film offers a variety of phenomenal death scenes which come about in the most original of ways. It is a bit more gory than the original, but sticks pretty closely to the moral of the story which is to cherish what it is that you have because if you don't it could just be ripped from your undeserving grasp - be it by a psychopathic serial killer or some dreaded disease.

My advice would be see Saw II, see it right away. And by the way - Oh yes, there was blood!
