What ? ? ?
The
Darklight story was so convoluted that I couldn't really make heads nor tails of it. It was trying to be partly a religious film and partly a science gone all wrong film. It really didn't make it for either type of film or anything in between for that matter.
The whole Lilith angle might have worked in a different context. I really wanted it to work too because I am all about girl power and not submitting to a man's will. But they never did seem to get their thoughts together to create a cohesive movie. Truth be told,
I had a very hard time staying awake during the film - and that's sad considering I watched it in the middle of the day.
What I was able to gather is that Lilith (Shiri Appleby) has been hiding out since the dawn of time and basically hunting and killing humans because of her
"darklight". This darklight is not only the source of all her power but also the source of all of her anger. Years ago she was caught by a highly secretive religious order and kept alive against the better judgement of Shaw (Richard Burgi). She was given an amnesia causing drug and left on the doorstep of one of the members of the faith who also happens to run an orphanage or something.
This is where it starts to get really odd. It seems there is a Benedict Arnold in the religious group, Chapel (John de Lancie), who has been selling/giving some of this darklight to a scientist, Anders Raeborne (David Hewlett), who is obsessed with developing some sort of immortality drug and with impressing his father. He succeeds with his
"wonder drug", but at what cost? The injections he gives himself not only turn him into some kind of demon-gargoyle thing, but they also make him a carrier of the Red Plague, with which he infects anyone he bites.
Shaw hates Lilith because years ago she killed his young son, but he is forced to retrain her to fight the spread of this Red Plague which will in short time wipe out mankind.
But can he trust her? A big theme throughout this movie is to trust in faith and not question what happens, that the creator has some sort of grand plan for all of us and sometimes bad things need to happen to fulfill this plan.
Hmmm . . .Lilith becomes an ass-kicking demoness and the fight of the century ensues. But even this is not enough to bring any light to the dark abyss that is this film.
I would say avoid it at all costs - and I am a big Sci-Fi Originals fan. Forget about this one making THE mark - it didn't even make A mark.
